Egypt v Nigeria: Super Eagles face must-not-lose qualifier

Chad s withdrawal from Africa Cup of Nations qualifying has left Nigeria facing a must-not-lose encounter at Egypt on Tuesday.

It was announced on Sunday that Chad had pulled out of qualifying with reports citing financial constraints as the reason for doing so.

Subsequently all points involving Chad have been discarded and Nigeria – without goalkeeper Carl Ikeme due to illness – are two points adrift of Egypt with two rounds of qualifying remaining.

Nigeria, who missed out on the 2015 AFCON, could have qualified as one of the best runners-up, but CAF confirmed that only the top team from Group G will qualify.

The match in Alexandria is the second between the teams in the space of five days, Mohamad Salah s late goal earning a 1-1 draw for Egypt in …

Armstrong signs new Cetlic deal to end speculation

Stuart Armstrong has signed a new two-year deal with Celtic to end rumours of an exit this month.

The Scotland midfielder only had one year left on his previous contract, prompting speculation linking him with a move to Premier League clubs Southampton, Swansea City and West Brom.

Armstrong, 25, was a key part of the Celtic side which won a domestic treble for the first time since 2001 under Brendan Rodgers last season.

I am delighted to sign this new contract with Celtic, said Armstrong after signing his contract until 2019 on Friday.

I have had a tremendous time at the club so far and it has been a period in my footballing career which I have enjoyed immensely.

Milan interested in Merkel swoop

AC Milan are reportedly keen to re-sign Genoa midfielder Alexander Merkel, with Taye Taiwo set to be included in the deal for the German.

Tuttosport reported Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is keen to add some more depth to his midfield in January, and has earmarked the 19-year-old Merkel as the perfect addition to the squad.

Merkel is a product of the Stuttgart youth academy, and moved to AC Milan in 2008.

He made his official first-team debut in December 2010, but left the Serie A giants for Genoa on a co-ownership deal at the end of last season.

He has since put in a number of impressive performances for the Luigi Ferraris outfit, and AC Milan are now keen to bring him back to San Siro, with Taiwo moving in the other direction.

Concord Lead Character Designer isn’t “Bothered at All” by Overwatch Comparisons

Firewalk Studios’ Concord was announced last year but received its first proper gameplay reveal at the recent State of Play. Despite the differences in setting and characters, the fact that it’s a hero shooter spurred some comparisons to Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch.

Fortunately, the development team seems to be taking these in its stride. In VGC’s first look, lead character designer Jon Weisnewski said, “I’m not bothered by it at all. Overwatch is a great game, and that team did some incredible stuff for the genre.

“At the same time, I strongly believe that our game has an identity that is unique to itself and that it plays like nothing else out there.”

Like Overwatch, Concord…

Wales better as underdogs – Coleman

Wales manager Chris Coleman believes the expectation on Belgium will give his side an advantage in their Euro 2016 quarter-final against the Red Devils.

Belgium routed Hungary 4-0 in their round-of-16 match to book themselves a quarter-final clash at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy against Wales, who beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in their first game of the knock-out stages.

Coleman admitted his side were unaccustomed to the role of being favourites, and said they would relish the chance to upset the odds by beating Belgium.

We were edgy going into the Northern Ireland game as we were expected to win and we work better as the underdog,” said Coleman.

We have proved that, and people will expect Belgium to win. They had some criticism coming into the tournament a…

Pique calls for respect after Catalonia friendly

Gerard Pique called for respect throughout Spain after representing Catalonia in a friendly against Venezuela.

Barcelona defender and former Spain international Pique played as Catalonia defeated South American visitors Venezuela 2-1 in Girona on Monday.

The 32-year-old came out of retirement, having ended his Spain career following the 2018 World Cup, to make his 10th appearance for Catalonia – whose fixture against Venezuela did not have official status as they are not recognised by FIFA or UEFA.

There were reports of anti-Spain chants during the match at Estadi Montilivi amid the ongoing tension following the Catalan independence referendum in 2017, which was deemed illegal by the Spanish government and led to violent clashes between police and voters.
